Maitri Pool or Friendship Bridge takes you from Nepal to Tibet. After crossing no man s land you reach the border town Zhangmu that you see in the background. After crossing into Tibet we got into Land Rovers provided by the department of tourism, Tibet. While the guide is Tibetan, the driver is always Chinese.Another view of the friendship bridgeView of Zhang Mu, the border town, as clicked from the bridgeThis Chinese couple were one of the many money changers whom we met.
This was one of the ways our Land Rovers crossed big rivers. As you enter the Tibetan plateau it is dust all the way.Even local women wore masks to keep dust away.We came across streams like these every couple of hours. At times the water level was high meaning we prayed that we did not get stuck like the many jongas that we saw on the way.Sometimes our prayers were not heard meaning we got stuck like this. We had to wait for a truck to pass by who would then pull us out. In one instance we got out but the truck got stuck.
We stayed in tents like these.Having a dip in the cold waters of the holy Brahmaputra.A Tibetan woman uses the power of the sun to make tea for us.Every Tibetan house as you see in this picture would have a Yak s face outside it.
With a Buddhist monk. Notice the terrain, looks like we were in a desert!In the background is Mount Kailash. Notice it stands majestically amongst smaller peaks. My biggest mistake during the trip was not clicking a close up of the holy mountain.Mansrovar Lake in the background. It is nearly a two-hour drive from the lake to Darchen the base camp where we stayed before starting a trek round the Kailash.Ghanshyambhai was gutsy enough to immerse himself in the holy cold waters of Mansrovar.

Few know that Tibetans worship Lord Shiva with probably as much if not greater fervor then we do in India do. I also found trishuls atop the famous Ki monastery in Himachal Pradesh s Spiti Valley.Three group members standing on top of the monastery with the Mansrovar in the background.

  2. Good clips of "to Manasarover". Gives a good idea of the tough going. To be young and be there,perhaps, is Kailash itself. Ramachander.
