Peace of Mind- A Road Map in the Bhagavad Gita

Goal of Existence
The aim of human life, which  is called ‘purushartha’, is well defined in all our scriptures. Among the four  aspects of ‘purushartha’ the highest or ultimate is called ‘moksha’.  Moksha means liberation.

What do we understand by the  term ‘Liberation’? Liberation means escaping from falling into the trap of  repeated cycles of birth and death. Why do we require Liberation? We require  liberation to avoid miseries built in us out of our desires spread over innumerable  previous births up to the present. Then how to go about reaching that destination  in present life?  How to disengage  ourselves from these fetters? The only way to reach that goal of freedom is to  follow the guidelines prescribed in our scriptures.

Among all the scriptures, The Bhagavad  Gita has clearly laid out the path for all of us to achieve that goal of life  in this very present birth. The end result need not wait till death. It can be  obtained now itself while living and pursuing our allotted duties.

The Bhagavad Gita has  enunciated four paths to reach the desired goal (which is termed Self  Realization). They are Gnana Yoga, Karma Yoga, Dhyana Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. It  should be born in mind that these are not separate paths but they are complementary  to each other.

Only one aspect of these Yogas  viz. ‘Sama Darshan’ or equanimity or calmness in our attitude is dealt with in  this essay. Equanimity of mind while dealing with the complexities of life enables  us to adopt an attitude of composure or evenness of temper even in adversity.

A wise person achieves this  objective of perceiving the Reality in the midst of Unreality through  equanimity. He is able to understand both the sides of the duality of life as  inevitable and learns to put forth right responses to all its contradictions  and pressures. He develops full confidence to face any situation in a calm and  unperturbed manner. His will be a passion-free mind wherein mundane desires do  not find place and favorable or adverse happenings do not produce any ripples. He  reaches the state of true happiness or Bliss – Sat Chit Ananda.

Goal Achievement: A Road Map
We are all in search of  health, wealth, happiness and also a purpose in life. The guidelines provided  by the Bhagavad Gita tell us that it is futile to search for them outside us.  It repeatedly emphasizes that all of them are already available in plenty within  us. We have to start the treasure-hunt and discover the riches in the form of  equanimity obtainable inside us. The following are a few Golden Tips from the  Lord with regard to equanimity of mind which is necessary to lead a life of  fulfillment..
