Life's Learnings
By Sanjeev Nayyar , February 2005 [ esamskriti@suryaconsulting.net]

Chapter :

I had initially put together this piece for a proposed talk to some students since I believe that the Indian education system does not adequately teach students how to face life. Later on I realized that these learning’s are universal so decided to upload it. If you like to share your learning’s mail me i.e. Sanjeev Nayyar at exploreindia@vsnl.net

Very Important
1. The moment you define yourself you confine yourself. Definitions by their very nature have an imprisoning effect; they block your creativity and potential.
2. Develop power of Concentration – improves self-control too.
3. Your degree is a passport to a Job. Thereafter, it is your personality.

Country
1. Rights vs. Dharma – our approach should be what is it that I can do for you rather than what is it that you can do for me.
2. Know your country, its culture & traditions. Travel throughout India.

Key Success Factors - Success is happiness, achievement, Impact & Legacy.
1. Humility meaning you do not believe you know it all, always learning.
2. Do not be attached to the fruits of your action meaning Do your best, then do not expect, let the future decide for you.
3. The more we share the more grow – keep on sharing what Ishwar has blessed you with. This way you would not stagnate, a rolling stone gathers no moss.
4. Try and increase the number of people you Impact by your words and deeds. A good example is the Iron man of India, Sardar Patel. He made the 562 Princely States unite with British India and thus created modern day India. Can we ever forget this? Or how many poor children do you financially support? Can the number keep on increasing as you prosper?
5. Profit is not a dirty word. What is more important is what you do with the profit. If you reinvest it in dharmic/charitable work profit is good. However, if profit is used to satisfy insatiable needs it becomes a dirty word.

Friends
1. Have atleast three friends. A friend is one with whom you can let your guard down without being apprehensive of being judged.
2. Beware of friends who are jealous of you.

General Life
1. Experience, reflect, and think using Intellect and Act. Intellect is the ability to distinguish between what is right and wrong.
2. Be a good listener - Have an Open Mind.
3. There will always be ups & downs in life; you will be happy and unhappy. Take them in your stride; continue to Act even the chips are down.
4. Do not be fatalistic but our karmas; actions both past & present, will determine the future.
5. Yeah jivan saab Samah ka khel hai. Time is of paramount importance meaning keep on trying, things will happen when the time is right.
6. Keep quiet for one hour each day i.e. maun vrat.
7. Question entrenched system but because it is old do not disagree with it.
8. Being Independent does not mean you do not listen to anyone.
9. Do not bother about events over which you have no control.
10. Time Management - prioritize and focus.
11. Be Outward looking. Interact with people across the world and keep posted of developments globally.
12. As you grow older, reflect on your life’s events to realize broad chain of events, what is your Nature – what is it that makes you tick.

Personal
1. Look after your body and nurture yourself.
2. Be Assertive not aggressive.
3. Have a Balanced approach to life – be in a state of perpetual happiness.
4. Become more aware of your own feelings, try and observe what other people are not saying.
5. Try and know your Strengths, next capitalize on it.
6. When confused sit back, think, possibly sleep over it and decide thereafter.
7. Dress Well – use Power dressing to your advantage.
8. Generate Collective Energy meaning work as teams.
9. Generate positive vibrations lifelong worldwide.
10. Never underestimate anyone least of all your enemies.

“Our first necessity, if India is to survive and do her appointed work in the world, is that the youth of India should learn to think, - to think on all subjects, to think independently, fruitfully, going to the heart of things, not stopped by their surface, free of prejudgments, shearing sophism and prejudice asunder as with a sharp sword, smiting down obscurantism of all kinds as with the mace of Bhima…”. (India’s Rebirth by Sri Aurobindo).

“I do not allow my schooling to interfere with my education”. Mark Twain.
