DearShri Vidyarthigaru, Namaskar You have raised two questions viz., 1 Connotation of the word Aditya 2. Clarification about the word Pushan, I do not know to which Mantras in the Prasna Upanishad you are referring to. I may clarify that while there are several meanings of the word Aditya, the one commonly understood meaning is The Sun God. There is no mix-up about this. The very title of the popular Aditya Hridayam Stotram proves this. For a fuller analysis of the word Aditya you may refer to my article entitled ‘Sun Worship - Suryopanishad’ appearing under the category ‘Vedas and Upanishads’ in this website. Rig Veda (Mandala 1 Mantra 50) also refers to Aditya as the Sun God. In whatever way you may interpret Aditya, the Sun, it means energy and in other words it is Brahman, the fundamental source or sakti behind everything. That is why Suryopanishad says“asaavaadityo brahma”: The Sun is the icon of Brahman. The word Pushan means one of the twelve aspects of the sun, known as the Adityas. In this aspect He represents the nourishing and life-supporting aspect of the sun. “Isana” means one who rules. Generally it is taken to mean Siva in his representation as Panchanana, a five-faced god of which the first face is turned towards the Zenith representing His highest aspect. Isana also means the name of the one of the eight dikpalakas guarding the north-east direction. Isana also is classed as one of the Rudras. But all these mean different names of Siva only. Ultimately Siva also is Brahman as the Svetasvatara Upanishad tells us. You may kindly refer to my articles on this Upanishad in this website. I may conclude that these are all the meanings as understood by generalists like me and which are taught by many well reputed Acharyas. Yet, it is possible you may have different interpretations as a specialist. Sanskrit is an open-treasure in which everybody can find the jewel of his own taste and liking. With warm regards Sethumadhavan
