Mystery Of Creation - Some Vedantic Concepts
By T.N.Sethumadhavan , January 2010 [ tnsethu@rediffmail.com]

Chapter :

Conclusion
It will be observed from the foregoing discussion that the riddle of the universe is the extraordinary secret which baffled man ever since he began to think deeply and which, as Rajaji puts it, must ever remain an insoluble paradox.

In the Vedas, the Upanishads and other Hindu scriptures the creation of the perceived universe is described over and over again in a bewildering variety of ways that often seem to contradict one another. This is because the human intellect being finite or limited cannot comprehend the Infinite or the Unlimited – Brahman - which has no qualities or attributes amenable for description.

But beneath all these apparent differences and contradictions, there is one fundamental principle which reveals to us that creation is a continuous process in which appearance, continuance and disintegration or otherwise understood as birth; life and death are no more than different stoppages in the same circular journey of repeated rounds. Nothing disintegrates or dies absolutely. It merely merges in the flux of the cosmic entity to reappear or be reborn in another form.

Creation cannot, therefore, be known by the same method by which objects can be known. In that sense it cannot be known at all but can only be mentally apprehended by introspection and meditation.

Hence, with a drawn match behind us, we have to return to the pavilion where the brilliantly lit banner of Rig Veda proudly proclaims that even the Gods perhaps may not have the solution to the eternal puzzle of the mystery of creation.

We can only speculate and agree that “There is not one chance in a trillion that life on Earth is an accident. Just look at the sun, the moon and everything within our universe. How can something so complex be a coincidence? It can't be that easy. It must mean that everything was planned, designed, shaped and created. Then, there must be a Creator. Who is this Creator? Why has he created us? Surely, this Creator is all high and all mighty, worthy of praise, appreciation and remembrance. The ultimate form of praise, appreciation and remembrance for such a being would manifest itself as worship. Which is exactly why He has created us”. - Deccan Chronicle dated .29-11-2009.

  2. This is with reference to Dr.M.Ramana’s valuable comments for which I am very grateful. He stated that it is a fantastic conclusion of mine that if the mystery of creation is not known by the mind and intellect, how we can know it by meditation. I reproduce here the relevant sentence of my article which clearly says that “Creation cannot, therefore, be known by the same method by which objects can be known. In that sense it cannot be known at all but can only be mentally apprehended by introspection and meditation”. Thus I have made a distinction between the acts of ‘knowing’ and ‘ apprehending’ and at the same time emphasized that the usual method of knowing the objects will not help us in our efforts to solve the mystery. According to the Oxford Dictionary ‘knowing’ suggests that one has complete information about a thing showing knowledge about it, while ‘apprehending’ suggests just a perception which is an individualized understanding with or without any universal sanction. Hence I drew the final conclusion agreeing with the Rig Veda that even the Gods perhaps may not have the solution to the eternal puzzle of the mystery of creation. – T.N.Sethumadhavan

  8. Shri Sethumadhavan is too good. I love reading his articles. Stephen Knap s opinion at the very beginning, is an eye opener “ Vedic philosophy self realization” is so true. Most of us do not know or care to know, what our wonderful scriptures contain. I understand that once, when someone passed a dirty remark on Benjamin Disraeli, a Jew, the then Prime Minister of England, during a session, retorted The honorable member will kindly remember that when my ancestors were writing the Old Testament, his ancestors were living on trees” or words to that effect. It is so true to the Vedas and the present world today. The Vedas were compiled much earlier than the Old Testament. Most of the world Was living on trees then. Even till date, the understanding of the Vedas is extremely difficult, even for the Hindus who belong to the same very culture. Poverty and slavery for so long has finished Hinduism, of which people like Shri Sethumadhavan are only a few decorative pieces left. Shri Sethumadhavan is doing a great service to Hinduism, by making such an easy reading of such a difficult subject. May God bless him. Bir Badshah Remember! Death is, just the cessation of consciousness that the world Is and I am nothing else. Bir Badshah
