- What are Musopathy Tonation
Breathing Techniques? It has shown promising results in blood pressure control,
pain management etc. TBT is a result of integrating various Indic forms like
music, meditation, mindfulness, yoga etc.
Press Release.
IIT Mandi and Bhavnagar Medical College Collaborate.
Dr Chinmay Shah, Dean Medical College, Bhavnagar confirmed that initial findings of the impact of Musopathy on Pain Management, Blood Pressure Control and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) by Bhavnagar Medical College in collaboration with IIT Mandi are promising. “We are excited to continue the Musopathy Tonation Breathing Techniques (TBT) intervention on several more participants over the next few days, with active inputs from IIT Mandi”, he said. “Subsequent studies are being planned on Sugar Control, Cognitive Health and other areas by the two institutions.”
Promising
results
On day 1 of the study, a few healthy
participants as well as those with varying health issues were handpicked for
initial observations. They were taught Nasal Tonation, one of several Tonation Breathing
Techniques (TBT) in Musopathy and their physical as well as emotional
parameters analysed.
Heart
rate variability:
Across the group, Tonation was the most effective activity for enhancing cardiac autonomic power, suggesting that controlled exhalation with vocalization of a single frequency is more effective at "coaching" the heart into a variable state than silent meditation or routine activities.
Hypertension: Findings suggested
that TBT acts as a powerful systemic relaxant that significantly reduces
vascular resistance and appears to be highly effective for vascular
decompression, particularly for those with higher blood pressure. TBT
maintained stability while enhancing internal regulatory power for those with
healthy baselines and provided immediate relief for those with elevated
baselines.
Pain
Management:
An
average 10% reduction in pain was observed amongst the study participants who
were dealing with knee, shoulder or neck issues.
Tonation
Breathing Techniques
TBT is an important part of participative
Musopathy and consists of organic, non-strenuous inhalation and controlled
exhalation with Melodic Tonation, usually through the nose or pursed
lips. Tonation is defined as a sustained production of any single frequency (like
440 Hz) that is comfortable to the participant at the given time.
“TBT has elements of Music,
Meditation, Mindfulness, Breathing Techniques and Yoga embedded in
it and potentially offers benefits derived from the practice of all these. But it does not
require any knowledge of any of these practices from patients or participants
and is the least challenging to them,” said Chitravina N Ravikiran, who trained the medical team on this intervention. His Musopathy program for Microsign a few weeks earlier inspired leading medical and academic specialists of Physiology, Anaesthesia, General Medicine, Community Medicine, Microbiology and Pathology to explore its potential further.
Pioneer of Musopathy
IIT Mandi is the pioneer of the Music and
Musopathy MS and PhD programs and research in the world. Musopathy (www.clisonics.com) is a
quantifiable approach to health science, seeking to analyse and apply the
fundamental, universal scientific and mathematical principles of sound and
music based techniques to promote health and wellness and take these even to
non-musician global populations.
It is distinct from Music Therapy which
pursues personalised health solutions to populations who can relate to various
genres of music such as Indian Carnatic, Hindustani, Western Classical, Jazz
etc.
Prof Laxmidhar Behera, Director of IIT Mandi said, “These programs are tailor made for everyone from any part of the world to do independent or interdisciplinary research on the health benefits of both music and Musopathy.”
Studies
by Charusat University and other Musopathists indicate that its various
elements like TBT and MANET help manage high sugar, respiratory issues (which
proved particularly useful to hundreds of patients during the Covid pandemic),
increases SpO2, muscle strain, stress, anxiety, sleep disorders etc and helps
improve cognitive functions, focus, calmness and attentiveness.
