On the sacred occasion of Guru Purnima, communities across India honour their teachers and mentors through ceremonies, music, and dance that express gratitude and devotion. Guru Vandan is one such tribute where disciples present classical performances that reflect the depth of the Guru–Shishya tradition, blending technical mastery with devotional expression to celebrate both artistic lineage and communal bonds.

Guru Purnima with Spectacular Kathak show
On the auspicious occasion of Guru
Purnima, the disciples of eminent Kathak Guru Dr. Sant Rajkumar Ketkar came
together in Dombivli to celebrate Guru Vandan 2026, a grand cultural event
dedicated to expressing their gratitude and reverence towards their Guru. The
evening witnessed a vibrant presentation of Kathak in its various dimensions,
with artists from different generations delivering refined and scholarly
performances that captivated the audience.
The programme commenced with the
ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Mrs. Jyoti Shidhaye (Chief Guest), followed
by an auspicious Ganesh Vandana presented by Mrs. Prajakta Barve, Director of
Nrutya Sadhana Niketan, along with her disciples, setting a devotional tone for
the evening.
The artistic presentations began with
Amruta Gupte and group, who performed a Paran, show casing the rhythmic
brilliance and intricate layakari of Kathak. Next junior students of Nrutya
Sadhana Niketan performed who presented the lively Khel Mandiyela. This was widely appreciated by all.
Next Mrs. Jyoti Shidhaye felicitated the
students of the institute, appreciating their dedication, perseverance, and
commitment to Kathak. One of the most emotional moments of the evening
followed, as all the disciples performed Padya Pujan of Dr. Sant Rajkumar
Ketkar, offering their heartfelt respect, gratitude, and devotion to their Guru
on the sacred occasion of Guru Purnima.
The performances continued with Giridhar
Ketkar, who presented Taal Dhamar, followed by Vandana Gujare, whose rendition
in Taal Matt beautifully reflected the elegance and rhythmic sophistication of
Kathak. Vedanti Modak, Manjiri Rane, and Anchita Patil Mirawankar then
performed compositions in Teentaal and Trivat, demonstrating the technical
richness and precision of the dance form.
Kathak exponent and guest artist Aditi
Yadav from Janki Prasad Banaras Gharana enthralled the audience with her vibrant
performance in a distinctive style. Her hold and artistry over complicated bols
were appreciated by Guru Raja Ketkarji. Performing with her were Ms Madhu
Kamble, Ms Unmesha Gangal (table), Ms Preeti Valuskar and Mr. Mithil Gawade.

In the latter half of the evening, Mrs.
Prajakta Barve presented an impressive Taal Chautaal, offering an insightful
demonstration of the pure dance (Nritta) aspect of Kathak. Her command over
rhythm, footwork, pirouettes, and graceful movement left a lasting impression
on the audience.
Next Pallavi Gawade performed the unique
rhythmic composition Taal Ashtamangal highlighting the beauty and complexity of
traditional Kathak repertoire.
A major highlight of the evening was “Bhasmasur–Mohini”, a Kathak dance drama presented by Preeti Ghanekar. True to the saying, "Katha Kahe So Kathak Kahave," the performance seamlessly blended storytelling, expressive abhinaya, rhythmic dance, and theatrical presentation. The transformation from the arrogance of Bhasmasur to the enchanting grace of Mohini was portrayed with remarkable artistry, earning a standing ovation and immense appreciation from the audience.
The programme concluded with the students
of Nrutya Sadhana Niketan presenting the devotional group composition
"Rupe Sundar Sawala Ge," beautifully portraying the elegance of Lord
Krishna through graceful Kathak movements, devotional expression, and
synchronized choreography.

The event was conceptualized, curated and
organised by Mrs. Prajakta Barve. It was a job very well done.
By bringing together both senior and
younger disciples of Dr. Sant R Ketkar, GuruVandan 2026 celebrated the timeless
Guru-Shishya tradition while strengthening the bond among disciples across
generations. The compere for the evening was Mr. S Sohoni whose scholarly
introductions and insightful narrations enriched the audience's appreciation of
each presentation.
A unique feature of Guru Vandan 2026 was
its traditional Pakhawaj-centric musical concept, giving the entire programme a
distinctive classical flavour. Kathak
performances were enhanced by powerful accompaniment of Pakhawaj and Tabla.
Tabla accompaniment was provided by Tabla
Alankar and Mr. Mayuresh Ketkar, the eldest son of Dr. Sant R Ketkar. Mr.
Suyash Mhatre accompanied on the Pakhawaj, while Mr. Mithil Gawade provided
harmonium accompaniment. The sensitive and scholarly accompaniment by all the
musicians greatly enhanced the artistic excellence of the programme.
The event was further honoured by the
presence of senior disciples of Dr. Sant Rajkumar Ketkar i.e. Mrs. Preeti
Waluskar, Mrs. Jyotsna Patil, Mrs. Jayashree S Barge along with renowned
Dombivli Kathak Guru Mrs. Sayali Shinde.
The audience, comprising dignitaries,
parents, and Kathak enthusiasts, applauded every performance. Mrs. P Barve was congratulated
for her meticulous planning, artistic vision, and flawless execution.
Blessed
by the Guru's grace, strengthened by the dedication of the disciples, and
enriched by the overwhelming response of the audience, Guru Vandan 2026 emerged
as a memorable celebration of the Guru-Shishya tradition and a significant
cultural milestone in Dombivli's classical arts landscape.
